ABOUT FOXGLOW CANDLES
Old Well Azalea was the first candle fully conceived. The label comes from a favorite oil painting that has graced Julian's for 60 years and, today, continues to hang in a place of honor in the store. This original painting was bartered for clothes by a stylish but penniless student artist with Missy's dad, Maurice Julian, in 1949.
Candles and labels are designed by Missy and Betsy and produced in close collaboration with husband Michael and the magic of Kent Evans, the husband of Missy's life-long best friend.
Of course, Carolina Argyle had to be in the mix since Alexander Julian designed the UNC Basketball uniforms, introducing the argyle. The Carolina Tar Heels have won three of the five National Basketball Championships sporting Carolina argyles.
To celebrate, connect, and translate the significance of each treasured scene to FOXGLOW'S customers, stories and histories are enclosed with each candle, researched and written by Missy and Betsy.
The boxes are wrapped in silk traditionally used for neckties. One of Missy's first tasks upon taking the helm of Julian's was to have blue and white stripe neckties made for the store in the correct shade of Carolina blue. These ties and bowties, called the Old School stripe, remain a favorite of college students and alumni worldwide. This pattern is the signature stripe used in all packaging of FOXGLOW.
After countless trials and endless research for the right box, the manufacturer was finally discovered inside Julian's, a business friend of Alex's. It was Missy's son, Bart, who put the finishing touches on the FOXGLOW box, recommending a black interior to give contrast to the white candle.
Mindful of our global need to be green, Foxglow candles are 80% soy, with lead-free, paper core wicks and natural fragrance oils from the true root of the scent. A soy wax blend burns cleaner, longer, and better holds fragrance. Our intention is for the customer to recycle the glass and keep or re-gift the packaging.
Missy and Betsy are currently at work expanding FOXGLOW'S collection to include other sites and cities across the United States. The pattern, Old School stripe, will continue to grace the signature packaging although colors and shades of stripes will change to reflect the personality of the particular location.
All candles are hand poured in the USA. Each scent is authentic to the scene, developed specifically for FOXGLOW, and field-tested by men and women to be equally appealing.
